Doody's Review Service:

Reviewer: Azfar B Sheikh, MD (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)

Description: This is a comprehensive, clinically oriented book that provides an inside look at leading electrophysiology labs in the world, with chapters focusing on how to perform ablation procedures in the setting of complex arrhythmias. The 58 chapters are written by world-renowned experts in the field.

Purpose: The purpose is to provide electrophysiologists, whether novice or experienced, a comprehensive resource to turn to for practical knowledge and tips on each ablation procedure, which previously could only be obtained by directly observing the experts.

Audience: This book would be a great resource for cardiology fellows interested in electrophysiology and electrophysiologists who are routinely performing ablation procedures.

Features: It starts with details of the technical aspects involved in each ablation procedure including preprocedure planning, vascular access and catheter placement, use of electro-anatomic mapping, characteristics of an arrhythmia being considered for ablation on an EP study, use of appropriate sheath/ablation catheter, ablation technique, procedure endpoints, and postprocedural care. This is followed by potential complications that may be encountered during and after the procedure. Each chapter also includes multiple images and/or videos that illustrate concepts.

Assessment: Due to the vast growth in the field of electrophysiology and the fact that arrhythmias are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in clinical practice, it is essential to have resources such as this book to turn to for learning about the technical aspects of ablation procedures. The authors do a superb job of compiling chapters written by experts in electrophysiology to contribute to this comprehensive book. It is easy to understand, with supporting picture and video illustrations demonstrating concepts.
