Featured title on IBHRE's Cardiac Electrophysiology Core Reading List Recommendations for the Physician and Allied Professional- more information
Edited by world-renowned cardiologist Kenneth Ellenbogen, MD, and collaboratively written by five expert physicians and allied health professionals, Essential Concepts of Electrophysiology and Pacing Through Case Studies guides the reader in developing and refining the key skill of analyzing tracings – one of the most essential proficiencies in electrophysiology.
With 60 cases comprising more than 140 tracings, figures, and tables and accompanied by multiple-choice questions, this scholarly yet eminently practical text delineates the core concepts and brings the reader directly into each case, offering EP physicians and fellows, device representatives and engineers, and other allied health professionals a fundamental understanding of the most important concepts on which the practice of EP is based.
Appropriate for professionals with different levels of proficiency, Essential Concepts of Electrophysiology and Pacing includes a wide array of basic to advanced tracings that range from surface ECGs to pacemaker and ICD recordings to complex intracardiac tracings that will prove vital in strengthening and sharpening practical skills. Relevant references included with each case allow the reader to delve even deeper into the principles presented and will be invaluable in helping to prepare for IBHRE, ABIM, and other EP certification exams.

FROM THE PREFACE:
One of the most essential skills in electrophysiology is the ability to analyze tracings. The scope of our practice has changed dramatically, and the tracings can range from the surface electrocardiogram, to pacemaker/ICD recordings, and finally, to complex intracardiac tracings. We have provided a sampling of tracings that cover the range of these experiences with a collection of basic, intermediate and challenging cases from all these areas. By doing this, we have created a volume that is useful to electrophysiology technicians, electrophysiology and pacing nurses, pacemaker and ablation field representatives and engineers, and especially electrophysiology fellows and physicians.
Each case includes relevant references that allow the reader to review the initial description of a particular pacing maneuver or the concept illustrated by the tracing(s). We have tried to focus on some of the fundamental concepts that underlie electrophysiology and pacing to provide an opportunity to review these important lessons.
We have enjoyed selecting and annotating these cases, and we hope that this book will prove useful to students and professionals preparing for the wide range of examinations that cover these areas as well as an educational and challenging learning experience.

Description
This book presents a case-based, visual approach to understanding fundamental concepts in electrophysiology. It is divided into four parts that address electrophysiology concepts, electrocardiograms, intracardiac tracings, and device tracings.
Purpose
The book is designed to focus on essential concepts that underlie electrophysiology and pacing. By covering a wide variety of tracings, the authors aim to provide a broad overview of the field through a case-based approach.
Audience
The audience includes anyone directly involved with electrophysiology. While this book probably is most useful for general cardiology and electrophysiology fellows, it is also designed for electrophysiology technicians, electrophysiology and pacing nurses, pacemaker and ablation field representatives and engineers. It can be used by anyone who wants a better understanding of electrophysiology tracings and fundamental concepts.
Features
The book examines and explains essential concepts in the field of electrophysiology through clinical scenarios and sample tracings. Each case begins with a short clinical vignette, multiple-choice questions, and either an electrocardiogram, intracardiac tracing, or device tracing. This is followed by the answer and a detailed explanation of the concept. With 60 cases, the authors do a good job of covering a wide variety of topics. The quality of the pictures and diagrams is outstanding.
Assessment
This well-illustrated, case-based approach to understanding fundamental concepts in electrophysiology will be useful to anyone directly involved in the field.
